What Temperature Is Too Hot for a Laptop?
Limits vary by model. As one verified example, Apple lists a storage range of –25°C to 45°C (–13°F to 113°F) and an operating range of 10°C to 35°C (50°F to 95°F) for the 14-inch 2024 MacBook Pro. Do not apply that range to every laptop: use the support page or manual for the exact device in the car.
Apple also notes that a Mac laptop battery's chemical age is affected by its temperature history and charging pattern. That supports minimizing repeated heat exposure; it does not provide a universal damage time or temperature for every laptop.
How to Store a Laptop in a Hot Car If You Must

- ▢ Power the laptop down and keep it out of direct sunlight and off sun-heated surfaces.
- ▢ Minimize the time in the vehicle; shade and cracked windows do not guarantee an in-spec temperature.
- ▢ Before use, let the device return to its stated operating range.
- ▢ If moving a cold laptop into warm, humid air, wait until visible moisture has cleared before powering or charging it.
Theft Is a Separate Risk
Heat guidance does not address theft. Keep the laptop out of sight before arriving at the parking location, follow your employer's data-security policy, and avoid leaving a work device unattended when a safer option is available.
